Frontlines: Fuel of War  Review by Steve Heimel

Frontlines is a fps that I played on the Xbox 360.  It was kind of like Halo and BattlOverall, I thought Turok was a pretty good game with a lot of interesting elements that kept the game fun. However I don't think that fun will last long enough for it to be worth buying. I mean its good and all but it starts to feal repetitive in my opinion, but still I give Turok a good rating and hope you enjoy itefield Modern Combat.  It's a fairly easy game to pick up seeing as its like almost every fps just a point and shoot game, with a few exceptions.  Anyway the story is basically a war over the oil supplies left on the world.  It is placed in the future, but not so far that we're shooting with lasers though.

The story is as I said a war over the oil supplies.  There is the Coalition Army which consists of the United States and Europe.  They face off against the Red Star Alliance which is the Russians and the Chinese.  You are part of the Coalition Unit " The Stray Dogs. "  Your missions are basically defending and seizing important installations that help the war.  The ending of course is a final face-off between the Coalition and the Red Star.  The single player is fairly intense although a little annoying at parts.  For instance while there is little recoil with the weapons they don't really seem to hit very often.  For example I used the sniper rifle in one of the missions and sorry to say it sucked.  I mean I had the retical right in the middle of a standing still enemy's head and yet somehow it missed, and another time it hit and I saw blood but they just ran away.  I mean what the heck is that.  Another problem is your AI teammates don't seem to grasp the concept that they should kill the enemies.  Alright I give them credit for shooting them but when it takes six people to kill one enemy it's a bit frustrating to watch.

Luckily, like I said the game is pretty easy and you don't really don't need them for more than the bullet sponges they are.  Some cool things however are the gadgets you can pick up like the drones.  These drones are basically remote control attack bots.  They range from kamikaze bots, to assault land rovers, to missle shooting helicopters.( They're aren't life size if anyones imagining controling big tanks with a remote control)  They are balanced with a signal range which doesn't change for each one so if you reach the limit it will not go any further and is harder to control.  The driving of vehicles was a little tough at first but it is easy to get used to and the vehicles repair themselves which is nice if you have the only tank for 5 miles.

The multiplayer is essentialy the campaign with other people.  You either join the Red Star or the Coalition and capture objectives to drive the other team back to their main base.  Unfortunately it is the only gametype to play, but it's okay because that gametype is really fun and you can pretend it's a deathmatch if you want to.  The map are ranged from big desert battlefields to the center of cities.  They each offer a good selection of vehicles, as well as a class system.  You can choose sniper, anti-armor, assault, and more.  Besides that you get to choose your gadgets class like drones, turrets, EMP, and sorry I never used the other one and don't know what it is.

I don't have much grudge against multiplayer I've never had much lag.( Maybe I just have amazing connection I don't really know)  However apparently the game is supposed to have amazingly big battles in multiplayer.  Maybe I just had bad luck and never found one, but all the games I had it could take 5 minutes to find an enemy, and the most I ever saw fighting was like 3 on 5. Some of the maps are kind of unbalanced also, like one map has about 5 helicopter pads on one base and none at the other base.  One other thing is that you can't talk to people unless you make a squad and I really don't see a point in this pointless limitation on communication.  These are just little complaints though and overall I liked the multiplayer.  It was fun and never really got boring though I only rented it.

The graphics in this game I would have to say are average.  The characters don't look sharp and look they've just had the color painted on their backs.(Especially the Red Star sodiers with their brown uniforms)  They did a pretty good job with making the enviroments looking torn up by war and the sky's look nice.  The ground texture looks pretty plain but this game isn't meant to be the prettiest game ever, it's supposed to be a fun big battle game.

The sound was pretty good.  The music wasn't a major dramatic soundtrack but you're usually surrounded by battle sounds so you don't listen to the music much.  The guns and vehicles sound like they should, and the cinematics let you hear the characters voices nice and clear.  They don't have the best dialogue but at least they don't have helicopter blocking out the sound like in some games.

Overall, I'd say that Frontlines isn't a must go out and buy game.  What it is is a bit above average it has fun moments and good gameplay elements. I'd say if your not so sure about buying it's at least worth a rent. Comment.
